The Transport Department of the Velocity Interoperability Network today issued its first sixteen transport permits and opened the register of permits. The permits authorise the carriage of goods and passengers for hire on designated routes, and the movement of heavy and hazardous goods by member organisations on their own account. Four of the permits carry a route-specific endorsement permitting heavy or hazardous goods on a regional route.

Operators that had carried goods or passengers under interim arrangements during the transition period applied to the Department before its establishment, and their permits were issued on 6 September 2026 for the periods originally requested. Among the permits issued are those held by the operators of the scheduled passenger services on the trunk and regional routes, by the operating company of the central goods exchange, and by the Health Supply Service for the carriage of medical supplies between the Health principal site and its depot.

The register records the holder, routes, classes of traffic and expiry of every permit in force and is updated within five working days of each issue, renewal, variation or revocation. Seven further applications are under consideration and will be decided within twenty working days of receipt. No fee is charged for a permit. The register and guidance on applying are set out on the Permits pages of this site.
